How to Evaluate a Probiotic Manufacturer‘s R&D Capability

When you source a probiotic product, certifications and price are easy to compare. What’s harder to judge is whether the manufacturer can actually develop a product that works — or whether they‘re repackaging commodity strains under a private label.

Here are five questions that separate real R&D partners from trading companies.

1. What is the scientific provenance of your strains?Ask for specific strain numbers, isolation sources, and whole-genome sequencing data. If the answer is vague — “our strains come from Europe” — you’re likely dealing with a middleman.

2. Do you have published clinical or preclinical data? For functional claims, you need more than in vitro data. Ask for peer-reviewed publications with DOI numbers. If the manufacturer can‘t share published research, you may need to commission your own studies — adding years and significant cost.

3. How do you verify strain identity and purity?Strain identity should be confirmed at the genomic level. Ask whether they use whole-genome sequencing or qPCR for every commercial batch. Look for a documented QC release system covering identity, potency, purity, and stability.

4. What documentation can you provide for my market?Different markets have different requirements. Ask for batch COA, strain identity reports, WGS data, stability data, and allergen statements. If they can’t provide these as standard, your regulatory team will have to fill the gaps.5. Can I visit your R&D facility or speak with your technical team?A trading company will make excuses. A real manufacturer will welcome a visit — or at least arrange a video call with their formulation scientists. Why batch-level traceability mattersBeyond the questions above, traceability is the ultimate test of a manufacturer‘s quality system. If a brand needs to reconstruct a batch in the event of a recall, a real R&D-driven manufacturer can do it in minutes — not days. This is where a documented QC release system and digital batch records become your brand’s best protection.A case in pointTingProbiotics has operated a joint laboratory with Jiangnan University since 2012. The partnership gives our OEM/ODM clients access to clinically studied strains, patent-backed formulations, and whole-genome sequencing data for regulatory submissions. Our quality system builds on this foundation. We operate a 70,000㎡ manufacturing campus, have been granted 20+ patents, and use a five-gate QC release system. Every batch is traceable from raw material to finished product. If you are evaluating probiotic partners and want to learn more about our strain portfolio, we are happy to arrange a technical call.
